City of Suffolk Information

The primary law enforcement agency in Suffolk is the City of Suffolk Police Department. Troopers assigned to the Fifth Division of the Virginia State Police concentrate on traffic enforcement on or near Interstate 664, and U.S. Highways 13, 58, 460.

Suffolk Circuit Court

(5^th Judicial Circuit of Virginia) is located at 150 North Main Street. (Honorable C. E. Eason, Jr., Honorable R. H. Sandwich, Jr., Honorable L. W. Farmer and Honorable M. A. Glassman) These Judges hear cases in Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties, which, along with the City of Suffolk, make up the 5^th Judicial Circuit.
Felony Trial, Sentencing, Probation Violations, and Motions are heard Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 9:30 a.m.
Bond Hearings are heard at the same day and time. Due to the shortage of "Judge Days" and scheduling issues arising from multiple jurisdictions in the same Circuit, docketing of bond hearings is strictly controlled by the Criminal Docket Administrator. They are set as soon as possible.
Non-Jury Misdemeanor Appeals are set on certain Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.
Arraignment - Defendants may have to appear for arraignment (entering of plea). The arraignment itself may take 5 to 10 minutes, but waiting time is unpredictable. Persons in custody are usually arraigned daily.

Suffolk General District Court

(5^th Judicial District of Virginia) is located at 150 North Main Street. There are three Judges assigned to that Court. (Honorable A. W. Bates, III, Honorable N. A. Belote and Honorable H. L. Holland ), The City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County and Southampton County make up the 5^th Judicial District. Felony Preliminary Hearings are held at 10:00 a.m. The great majority are heard on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Misdemeanor Criminal Trials are held at 10:00 a.m., Monday through Friday.
Traffic Cases are set at 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. depending on the Officer or Trooper's schedule.
Arraignments for persons released on bond or summons are at 9:00 a.m. Attorneys may set initial trial or preliminary hearing dates without their client needing to appear. Persons in custody are arraigned by video everyday.
Bond Hearings - May be conducted by agreement with the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney. Docketing of bond hearings is strictly controlled by the Criminal Docket Administrator. They are set as soon as possible.

Suffolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court

Located at 150 North Main Street. Two Judges hear cases there (Honorable J. E. Wiser and Honorable S. D. Clark) Both Judges also hear cases in the City of Franklin, County of Isle of Wight and County of Southampton.
Felony Preliminary Hearings and Felony Trials for Juveniles are heard on Tuesdays.
Misdemeanor Cases are heard on Thursdays.
Traffic Cases are heard on Fridays.
Bond Hearings are heard on Fridays.
Arraignments are heard on Friday at 8:30 a.m. if released on bond or summons, or at 1:00 p.m. on the next day court is in session if in custody. Attorneys may set initial hearing or trial date without clients having to appear.
Jail information - Almost all Suffolk adult inmates are held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail, 2402 Godwin Boulevard, Suffolk, VA 23434
